What conditions are there to pre-paid cellphone plans in New York?
I will be travelling to New York City next week for more than a week from Malaysia. I usually purchase a pre-paid SIM card at the country I visit. I have serached the net and there are several companies that offer pre-paid options in the US. However, most mention that there is a need to purchase a phone. Is there any company that offers pre-paid starter packs without the need to buy a phone considering I will be bringing mine with me? Alternatively, if I do have to purchase a phone (which I could just get a cheap phone), what are the conditions of purchase? Will I need a permanent address in the US or anything similar to that or can we just buy it off the shelf with no questions asked?

Some places will ask for address to have it on file for warranty. It’s not necessary that you give your address though. You can buy a SIM card for services from TMobile and Cingular for the pay as you go phone.
